The SS Kyle – Part of Our History

The Kyle

Originally uploaded by eracose

Driving along Veterans’ Memorial Highway near Harbour Grace, I am always torn between looking down at the Kyle in the harbour and looking across the road at the Harbour Grace Air Strip [which is perhaps disconcerting to oncoming traffic.]

The Holdin’ Ground Project

However, it was not until we began working on “The Holdin’ Ground Project” that I realized the full impact of the Kyle on the lives of people in Conception Bay North. Dale Jarvis, Intangible Cultural Heritage Development Officer for the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, was part of the audience at the Holdin’ Ground Project Launch.  He pointed out that the towns of Conception Bay North – Carbonear, Harbour Grace, Spaniard’s Bay, Bay Roberts, Brigus, and Cupids (just to name the larger towns) are very well known for their ties to the Kyle and the Labrador fishery.

Many of the older citizens interviewed participated in the Labrador fishery at some point in their lives, and many of them traveled to coastal Labrador on the Kyle.

Mrs. Emmie Roach (88) tells of going to the Labrador on the Kyle as young woman.

Cecil Greenland (104), Gus Menchions (94),  and Ralph Greenland (80) also describe going to the Labrador.  See other interviews that were part of the Holdin’ Ground Project  > >

Ted Russell’s “Smokeroom on the Kyle”

As part of  “A Time in Pigeon Inlet,”  Ted Russell (through the magic of recording), Kelly Russell, Russells the Corner,  the Pigeon Inlet Players, and the audience read Ted Russell’s “Smokeroom on the Kyle.”  Ted Russell, who grew up on Coley’s Point, must have heard many stories about the Kyle .

In addition, Victoria Loyal Orange Lodge #3,  which  has been resorted and opened to the public as a play house and museum by Brenda and Jerry Mercer, has a 10 Foot Hand Made Model of the Kyle.

The Pigeon Inlet Quilt

The Pigeon Inlet Quilt which was recently donated to the Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation by the Pigeon Inlet Quilters Guild has two blocks based on “Smokeroom on the Kyle.”  The top left block  is “The Kyle” by Norma King and the block with the pot bellied stove almost in the middle of the left side is “Inside the Smokeroom on the Kyle” by Heather French and Enid Penney. [They even have “coal” – made of labradorite – in the bucket.]  In order to make the block, they consulted older members of their family who could remember what it looked like.  [The quilt is on permanent display at the Bay Roberts  Visitor Information Centre on Veterans’ Memorial Highway.]

Street View on Bay de Verde Peninsula, Conception Bay Centre, and CBS!

Yesterday, completely by chance, “street view” on Google maps for Route 60 and Route 70 popped up when I was searching for a map for one of the websites we look after.  You can travel both routes, seeing 360 degree views,  in both Conception Bay North and Trinity Bay South, as well as Conception Bay Centre and Conception Bay South.  For the most part the views keep to the two main routes, but all the camera work was done on a beautiful day in the summer of 2009, so that a person who is not familiar with the area can get a good idea of what can be seen, and actually locate addresses that are on the Conception Bay Highway and the Trinity South Highway.

Street View Does Bay de Verde

One town where the view deviates from Route 70 is Bay de Verde. Click the link and you will see clothes on a clothesline on the left and the Bay de Verde Post Office straight and the harbour straight ahead. You just double click to move ahead or back. Amazing!

Google Map Person

Google Map Person

To see a specific spot on the highway, just click on the little yellow person symbol with your mouse, and drag it to the spot on the highroad that you want to see. You will be able to see it at 360 degrees. It is a wonderful way to see exactly where you want to go and to locate a specific place.  So far I have looked at the Conception Bay Highway though Brigus, Bay Roberts, Spaniard’s  Bay, Harbour Grace,  and Carbonear.  It took at look at a great 360 degree view of the Shearstown Estuary.  (Unfortunately, the keep to the highway, so you cannot see the Shoreline Heritage Walk. ) I have also checked out Trinity Bay and you can clearly see Shag Rock from Route 60 and all the communities, such as Blaketown, Dildo, New Harbour, Whiteway, Heart’s Content, and Heart’s Delight. It is certainly the next best thing to being here!

Shearstown Estuary – 2009 Torngat Municipal Achievement Award – Environmental Sustainability

The Shearstown Estuary wetlands is jointly managed by the towns of Bay Roberts and Spaniard’s Bay.   The towns jointly won the 2009 Torngat Municipal Achievement Award in the category of Environmental Sustainability.

Baccalieu Consulting has worked with the Joint Management committee of the two towns to develop materials about the wetlands project.  The members of the Joint Management committee are Cathy Kleinwort (chair) and Councillor Mose Anthony representing Spaniard’s Bay, and Pat George and Councillor Bill Seymour representing Bay Roberts.

The audience for materials that have been developed include residents of the two neighbouring towns, as well as people across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and through the Internet, people all over the world.

Shearstown Estuary Website

Even though the Shearstown Estuary has been allotted space on both the Town of Bay Roberts website and the Town of Spaniard’s Bay website, the Joint Management Committee wanted website of their own.  After discussion, we concluded that a WordPress blog was the best solution for them.

Over 90 Photos  on Flickr

We have uploaded a large number of photos which we have taken of the Sheartown Estuary in various seasons on Baccalieu Consulting’s Flickr site.

1o Signs about Life in the Estuary

We have developed 10 signs that have been placed in the estuary describing life forms in the estuary.  The signs include 6 about birds of the estuary which had information about the bald eagle, the osprey, the common loon, the American black duck, the dark-eyed junco, the blue jay, the northern pintail, the green-winged teal, the greater yellow-legs, the black-bellied plover, the common golden-eye, and the black-headed gull.  In addition, there is one sign about flowers, one about grasses, one about invertebrates, and one about fish.

All signs have been uploaded to Scribd.  The sign which describes four of the flowers in the estuary is linked below, and the others can be easily found.

YouTube Presentations on the Shearstown Estuary

We have also prepared two YouTube presentations about the estuary.
